Overview

The ScreenTime Companion app is part of the StandUpTV intervention developed by ASU’s College of Health Solutions.

The app helps users reduce recreational screen time by promoting physical activity, using behavioral nudges and real-time tracking to support lasting habit change. My role was to modernize the app’s UX and UI, making it more intuitive, engaging, and accessible to research participants.

Digging Into the Problem

Before jumping into design, I conducted a heuristic evaluation of the existing app, identifying major usability breakdowns:

  • Key features like goal-setting and tracking were missing or inconsistent

  • Visual hierarchy was missing, making the experience feel disjointed

  • Language was overly clinical, and users didn’t feel motivated to return

  • Most importantly, the interface didn’t reflect modern accessibility or mobile UX standards

To better understand users, I also conducted interviews with students and faculty who had tested the app in its original state. I asked them not just what they did with it, but how they felt using it. Most responses fell somewhere between “confused” and “unmotivated.”

Testing & Iterating

I tested the prototype with a group of 6 users across two rounds of usability sessions. They were asked to:

  • Set a daily screen time goal

  • Review their weekly usage

  • Explore suggested behavioral tips

What didn’t work:

  • Some icons weren’t intuitive enough for key actions

  • Progress metrics lacked context (users didn’t know what was "good")

  • The readings screen felt too content-heavy

What I improved:

  • Replaced ambiguous icons with clear labels and onboarding tooltips

  • Added benchmark comparisons (e.g. “You spent 20% less time than last week”)

  • Simplified the interventions screen with bite-sized, scrollable cards

After revisions, testers reported feeling more motivated, with improved understanding of how to track and adjust their habits.

Reflection
Redesigning the StandUp TV app was a rewarding experience that pushed me to think deeply about how design can support real behavior change. This project required translating complex research into a simple, approachable experience that users could understand and trust.

Working alongside the College of Health Solutions research team taught me how to
balance research accuracy with user needs. I saw firsthand how language, feedback, and flow all influence whether someone sticks with a healthy habit. The project strengthened my ability to design with empathy while honoring scientific goals.

Receiving a
SUN Award for this work was a meaningful moment. It showed me that thoughtful, human-centered design can create real impact when it's rooted in purpose and collaboration.
